The Galactic Dust in Corona Australis: Two blue-reflection nebulae, clouds of dust scattering the light of nearby stars, dominate this photograph. They are associated with young stars, not more than a few million years old. A much older globular cluster of thousands of stars can be seen top right. © Martin Pugh (UK
Comet Holmes by Nick Howes in the UK. The nucleus is a dirty snowball just a few miles across. It passes by us once every seven years
Centaurus A Ultra Deep Field by Michael Sidonio from Australia. The stars in the foreground of this image are from our own Milky Way, with the Centaurus-A galaxy in the centre, is millions of light years beyond
Star Trails Blue Mountains by Ted Dobosz (Australia) As the Earth spins during the 30-minute exposure of this photograph the stars make trails around the sky's South Pole
Eta Carina Nebula: This photograph shows part of a vast nebula, or cloud of dust and gas, from which a new generation of stars is condensing. In the centre a group of bright young stars has already ignited, burning off the surrounding gas and dust to form an enormous void in the heart of the nebula. The Eta Carina nebula lies at an estimated distance of between 6,500 and 10,000 light years away. © Thomas Davis (USA
Venus, Jupiter and Moon trails over the Nepean River: Taken with an exposure of two hours, the photograph shows the trail of the three bodies rising in the sky at sunset. Venus and Jupiter are five of the planets which are visible at various times with the naked eye from Earth, the others being Mercury, Mars and Saturn. © Vincent Miu (Australia
